What is E-Commerce?
“Making the shift from Bricks and Mortar to Selling Online”
Back in the old days….
For the past couple of centuries, the only way to buy goods or services was by physical contact. Physical contact could be walking into a store, calling a sales rep over the phone, or recurring billing. In the past 15 years, with the emergence of a phenomenon called the internet, people have taken a different direction when purchasing items. Imagine this: You see an ad on TV for a cheesy Christmas CD. All the tunes that are listed on the screen are familiar to you. More importantly, these tunes get you into the holiday cheer mood. To sum it up in so many words, you are already sold on the item. So, the decision has been made to buy the product. You walk into another room, you turn on the computer. You open up Internet Explorer, and you key in the address that was listed on the commercial. Hold on your almost done! You click on the CD you so desire. You provide the site with your name, address, etc. Your purchase is done, and will be at your door step in less than 2 days. Think about this for a second. You just purchased an item for a lower price and you did not even have to leave your house to do it. For those that would rather get in a car and drive for 15 minutes to purchase a product (assuming it is in stock), and pay a higher price, then the internet may not be for you
What is ecommerce?
The term is called ecommerce. What is ecommerce? It is the buying and selling of goods online. Some people may call it ecommerce, some a shopping cart, and others call it an online store. Whatever one wants to call it, they all describe the same thing.
Fast forward to the new millenium
It is no secret that people are purchasing products online more than ever. Not to mention, there has been an upward slope for the past ten years. Online shopping is increasing every year, and will continue to do so for at least the next quarter century. Why? Because it is tailor made to meet the needs of the 2 primary figures in the buying and selling process. The consumer and the business that sells to the consumer. The consumer is now enabled to have the ability to browse and purchase a product, without ever having to leave the comfort of their own home. The business owner now has the ability to cut their costs and reduce their expenses by moving away from the bricks and mortar or traditional way of selling products. Also, they now have the ability to expand their business to an international audience. It is a win/win situation for both parties. According to the US Census Bureau, in 2004, e-commerce is a multi-billion dollar business, and has doubled in the last 5 years. There are 2 reasons that may help explain this phenomena.
Reasons for the Internet Phenomena
The first reason is that consumers who purchase products are more familiar with the safety of the internet. They are aware of the reliability and safety of purchasing a product on-line. In other words, they have overcome “technophobia”.It is actually more safe to do banking on the internet, than to go to your local bank. They also realize they can pay less for items, and not have to leave the comfort of their own home to do so.
The second reason is that a majority of items purchased are based on their functionality. In other words, the consumer does not have to see the product or try it on to know what it offers.
Why people will buy online?
According to mercoshire.com, the top money makers on the internet all have 2 things in common. Their site looks legitimate, and they offer a prime opportunity for their consumers to purchase products on line.
So where will your focus lie? Aesthetics, and providing tools for your customers to be able to purchase products in an easy and cost efficient manner. Truth of the matter is, you may have to spend money to do this.
However, you should not be bankrupted doing so. You may hear some people claim you need to spend tens of thousands of dollars to get a quality website and shopping cart. This is a phallacy. What you need is the right company taking care of you.
